Gyms are the best place to train; there’s no doubt about that. Still, even though gym memberships are not too expensive, not everyone can afford one. After all, they a recurring expense, you are supposed to pay every month.
Also, sometimes you don’t have time to go to the gym. Therefore, it is a good idea to have the right equipment to have a decent workout at home, as a backup.
Although training people is what we at FitAndPsyched do, we would lie to tell you that it’s impossible to train at home. You can do a great workout just with your bodyweight. Is it going to be the best workout ever? No. But, is it good enough, and better than nothing? Yes, absolutely. Here are three items that every home should have, turning it into a budget home gym.
#1: A Basic Set Of Dumbbells
A pair of dumbbells is the most versatile piece of equipment, period. Dumbbells allow you to train every single muscle in your body. There are literally hundreds of exercises you can perform with just a pair of these iron beauties.
What’s more, dumbells are easily stored away when you are not working out. You can put them under your bed, in a bag in your closet, anywhere. The convenience level they provide is second to none. Paired with their versatility, the convenience makes them the ultimate piece of (home) gym equipment.
Because this is a budget list, we recommend getting a used pair of dumbbells. New ones are good, but they can get pricey. So search online, or visit garage sales in your neighborhood. And don’t worry about looks, your muscles don’t know the difference between pretty and ugly; they only understand the language of weight and progressive overload. Rusty? Just wear gloves.
Our suggestion is to get a pair of adjustable dumbells. You can use those plates for other purposes, and it saves up space. If you get fixed dumbbells, you will outgrow them quickly, as your strength will rapidly increase, especially if you are a beginner.
#2 Jump RopeEvery workout needs cardio, and jumping rope is one of the most effective forms of it. What makes it unique is that it is simple, and you can do it anywhere, so no excuses. Weather is not a factor, as you can jump rope in your living room. What’s more, jump ropes are incredibly affordable, even if you get one that counts your reps.
Jumping rope will not only make you sweat like crazy, but it will also promote balance, and hand-eye coordination. Furthermore, although this is jumping, it is actually a low-impact activity, especially if you do it at home, or on a lawn. If you are overweight, opt for two-legged jumps, as they completely minimize the impact.
#3 Pullup Bar
A pull-up bar is excellent not only for doing pullups, and their closes cousin chinups, but for training your lower abs, and for stretching. You really get a lot for your investment, as pull-ups are one of the best upper body exercises, simultaneously training your back and biceps, which will allow you to pack size quickly.
The best idea is to get a removable pullup bar that you can mount on your doorframe, and then take off after you finish your set. That way, you will get a great workout, without having a bar mounted all the time. So no hitting your head 5x a day.
Conclusion
These three pieces of equipment will allow you to perform a great workout. Of course, it is much better to exercise at a gym.
