Are Compression Sleeves Effective and Beneficial?

Compression sleeves (tight,spandex-like sleeves or clothing) are often worn by athletes to increase blood flow to muscles to supposedly improve performance in exercise and speed up recovery time. But, do they actually work? While there are some disadvantages, some studies indicate that there are benefits to wearing them.

Some athletes say they feel exercise is easier when they wear the garments while exercising. According to a New York Times article there is little to no evidence to support that they increase blood flow to the muscle while playing sports or working out because the blood flow to the muscle is at it’s maximum during exercise.
Although not particularly effective for performance, studies show that compression sleeves and undergarments are more beneficial for recovery time. They increase blood flow to the muscle when it normally slows down after use, reducing muscle soreness and inflammation. The downside to this is to get the benefits, you would have to make sure the garment is tight and wear it for several hours post exercise. This can be uncomfortable- not to mention stink!
