With the holidays approaching and you’re ready to get off the couch and tackle your New Year’s resolution of getting back in the gym, here are a few tips to help you out.
- Focus on the long term. Being a personal fitness trainer in South Florida, I’ve seen dozens of people come into the gym and fade away as quickly as they appeared. Why you ask? Failing to change their way of thinking is at the top of the list. At our private, personal training gym in West Palm Beach, my wife Amy Melnicoff and I preach, “Change your mind, to change your body”. Remember, you didn’t get OUT of shape overnight so don’t expect to GET in shape overnight. Focus on BEING HEALTHY, not how much weight you can lose in 30 Days.
- Do your research and hire a QUALIFIED personal trainer. Look for a private gym specifically designed for 1 on 1 or small group training. I’m not saying that ALL trainers at the corporate gyms like 24 Hour Fitness or LA Fitness are unqualified, but understand that the dynamics of those gyms are driven daily by high pressure sales in order to meet monthly quota. You are strictly a number.
- Accountability. Experience. Schedule. Proper form. Experience. Support system. Did I mention experience? Experience is one way that we gain knowledge. Applying what we learned in our personal training certification course is one thing, experience is another, it can’t be taught, it’s earned over time. The more time, the more experience.
