Today I want to put out a few interesting facts regarding the human body. I have a 15 minute break between clients, so let’s see what we can touch on in this short period of time……
- Muscle is three times more efficient than burning calories than fat. So the more muscle we have, the more calories we burn at rest. In fact for every pound of muscle gained, the body will burn an extra 50 calories/day. Not a bad deal…..look better AND burn more calories 24/7.
- Each muscle fiber is thinner than a human hair and can support up to 1000 times it’s weight. Considering there are over 600 muscles in the human body, if they were all able to pull in the same direction you could lift 25 tons.
- Almost half the human body’s weight is made from one of three types of muscle. Skeletal (voluntary), which moves bones and other structures. Cardiac, which contracts the heart (involuntary) and smooth (involuntary), which are found in the walls of hollow organs organs throughout the body.
- The average person walks 70,000 miles in a lifetime which is approximately three times around the world.
- Exercise can slow or help prevent heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis (bone loss), and loss of muscle mass.
- Most Americans want to be in better shape, but few are willing to put the work in to get there. One of the latest examples that I’ve seen, was a bodybuilder showing me their diet that contained Munchkins from Dunkin’ Donuts and Cinnamon Toast Crunch. That was day 1 of the plan, I didn’t go any further. Could that diet work? Yes. Would that person need massive amounts of insulin in order for it to work? Yes. There’s no place in health and fitness for that.
