You want to start working out, but where? How do you decide? You need to consider what you want in a gym and then you need to explore what is in your area.
First, consider distance – the farther and longer you have to travel for your workout, the more likely you will be to skip it.
Do you want group classes? If classes – you need to what if any classes are offered and when. Also be sure to check if there’s an extra fee for the class.
Free weights? Machines? TRX? See if the gym has the equipment you want to use and also see what kind of condition it’s in. Are there a lot of broken machines? If yes, that is not a good sign.
Be sure to visit the gym at the time when you would usually workout. How crowded is it? Does the gym have ample machines and weights?
Is the place neat? With some gyms, you can end up spending a lot of time looking for the dumbbell you need because the people who used it didn’t put it back.
Be sure to check out the locker rooms. Are they clean? Do they have showers? If you plan to go to work or elsewhere straight after your workout, decent showers and lockers will be important.
Also note the temperature of the gym. Too warm? Too cold? Just right?
Perhaps the most important thing to consider is the culture of the gym. Will you be comfortable working out there? Some gyms attract people who seem more interested in being seen than working out. Will that bother you? Some gyms don’t allow their patrons to be loud – grunting and groaning. If noise is part of your routine, you will want to make sure you will be welcome there.
You will see a big cultural difference between a local private gym (usually owned and operated by a trainer) and a corporate gym. The corporate gyms tend to be very large, many machines, and many people. They can be overwhelming, especially if you’re just starting out.
A private, locally owned gym, however, is usually smaller and may tailor to particular athletes. The advantage is that they are less crowded and you can really focus on your workout.
