Despite the myths of weight training making a woman muscle bound, too big or manly loooking, training with weights is the only way to truly sculpt the body. Although I’m addressing the physical changes today, the confidence and well being that comes from strength training is an added bonus that can’t be disregarded. Here at Fit and Psyched located at 1177 Clare Ave, Unit #2 in West Palm Beach, Florida we incorporate weight/strength training to some extent in all of our workouts. Depending on the clients goals, level of conditioning or injuries, these along with other factors go into how much of the workout will be tailored to weight training.
Weight training grew in popularity as athletes from all sports became stronger, faster and leaner, prompting people from all walks of life to realize that the benefits of such training goes well beyond sports. What better way to fight the aging process than to become stronger which in turn helps in everyday activities from walking, lifting or simply picking things up. Building muscle builds the metabolism which in turn burns body fat. One of our sayings is that cardio without strength training leads only to a smaller version of the big version!
Osteoporosis. With the number of Americans who have this condition hovering somewhere around 10 million, 80% of those people are women. Smaller bones than men, the loss of bone protecting estrogen which occurs after menopause are just a couple factors working against females in this regard. Weight training makes bones denser which helps fight against these factors and more as we grow older.
While we can’t utilize cardio as weight training, we can weight train at a faster tempo to get a cardio type workout effect along with the benefits of strength training all wrapped into one! Strength training may be just using body weight, using bands for resistance, TRX training or good old fashioned dumbells and barbells. Whichever route you decide to go, don’t foreget to incorporate strength training as part of your fitness routine.
