At this time, no one knows for certain what exactly makes up a muscle “knot”. However, according to a recent article by the New York Times, most experts agree that they are specific areas of contraction within the muscle fiber.
The knots don’t usually happen from one incident, but develop from constant use or poor posture. The knots block blood flow to the affected tissue, thus causing soreness. Other studies argue that they don’t exist since knots don’t show up on scans, stating that it could involve the brain and irritated nerve endings.
Although no definitive conclusions have been drawn from scientific research we as well as most therapists, believe that massage is the best way to treat them. Deep tissue massage with hands, a small ball or foam roller is the best way. Acupuncture has also shown to have some benefit for muscle soreness.
