What Do I Eat Before Training?

The saying is true, “you can’t out-train a bad diet!” Following a healthy nutrition program is extremely important if you want to maximize your workouts, gain lean muscle, and burn fat. Depending on when and what you eat before a workout can have a positive or negative effect in your performance.

First, decide how much time in advance you will eat before your workout. A good idea to follow is to incorporate a mixture of carbs and protein beforehand. If you decide to have your preworkout meal 2-3 hours prior, try some Ezekiel bread with lean protein or brown rice with protein and roasted veggies. It is ok to have some fat (such as avocado) but it is best to have it no sooner than at least 2 hours before your workout, as it is processed slower in your body than carbs and protein.

If you plan your preworkout meal under 2 hours before, try a protein smoothie or Ezekiel toast and almond butter. If you eat one hour or less before your workout, try having a piece of fruit or Greek yogurt.
Following these guidelines can help you get the energy you need before your workout, as well as avoid any stomach discomfort. Also, everyone’s body is different, try what works for you! Take note of how certain foods make you feel when eating them before the gym and adjust to your needs.
